About Lettering tattoos
Origin
Lettering is as old as tattooing itself: sailors' 'MOM' banners, Chicano script and gothic blackletter all came before today's fine-line handwriting and typewriter quotes, which grew with the single-needle trend of the 2010s.
Characteristics
The words are the design. The typeface carries the mood: flowing script for names, typewriter or serif for quotes, Roman numerals for dates, bold block letters for statements. Spacing, line weight and a clean baseline matter more than decoration.
Best for
Names of loved ones, birth dates, mantras, quotes and reminders. Popular on the forearm, collarbone, ribs, spine, wrist and behind the ear.

Frequently asked questions
What font is best for a name tattoo?
Flowing script and handwriting fonts are the classic choice for names because the joined letters feel personal. Serif and typewriter fonts read more clearly at small sizes, and Roman numerals suit dates. Try the same name in a few styles before you choose.
How small can a lettering tattoo be?
Fine lines spread a little under the skin over the years, so very small letters can blur together. As a rule of thumb, keep letters at least about 5 mm tall and give them generous spacing; your tattoo artist can tell you what works for your placement.
Can I tattoo someone's handwriting?
Yes. Handwriting tattoos, often from a letter or a card, are a popular tribute. Bring a clear scan or photo of the original to your artist so they can trace the real strokes. The generator is good for trying layouts and sizes first.
How do I make sure the spelling is right?
Type the text exactly as you want it, in quotes, and check every letter on the design, then again on the stencil before the needle touches skin. For other languages or scripts, ask a native speaker to confirm the wording.
